classes, we are teaching them proper technique and skill, and it is amazing to see how much these little ones can absorb!!
Early on, I don’t think I even ever fully understood just WHY ballet was so important. Of course, now I have a much greater understanding and I thought it would be a good idea to share what I have learned. I know for many students and parents new to ballet or just new to Vibe they may have questions regarding ballet, it's importance and why classes are taught the way they are at Vibe.
We like to compare ballet to other hobbies or sports to put things into perspective.
Example #1 - Piano - children love to actually PLAY the piano but usually don't enjoy learning and practicing music notes.
However, to get to the fun part of playing great songs.........they of course HAVE to learn music notes and learn to read music. So you learn, practice and build on the technique and fundamentals of piano before you can actually
play. However, learning the notes and mastering them can be challenging but also rewarding in itself. But knowing that it's going to bring you to that level where you can read music well and play beautiful fun songs helps to inspire.
Example #2 - Soccer - many children LOVE to play soccer and be a part of a soccer team - but you don't just show up and play a game - you learn how the game works, how plays are formed and why, learn soccer skills one at a time and practice them over and over at every practice so that they become second nature when you are actually in a game - build strength and technique
thru conditioning exercises - of course the kids favorite part is actually playing the game - but in order to know how to play, play correctly and play well they need to learn and practice all the skills that make up the actual game.
This is exactly how ballet works - ballet is the backbone and base to EVERY FORM of dance, gymnastics and even for many sports teams as well as our Artistic Director Dawn has actually been a ballet instructor to many NFL players. It teaches you body awareness, control and placement - focusing on how your body should be placed from your toes all the way up to your
head. I know that every little girl loves to twirl and wants to be a ballerina. That's what all of this is leading up to be it in jazz,
ballet, tumbling or any form of dance. Once they start to understand and develop those basic skills they will be "twirling" or in the dance world performing pirouettes flawlessly - they will also be strong and know how to move thru various dance movements with ease and really enjoy it. The better they are at ballet the more they will thrive in every form of dance and even if
they chose, sports. Again, this learning process can be challenging in the beginning but also can be so rewarding as they start to master each move and understand not only why they are doing them but seeing them incorporated into other movement in dance. And just like any other art form or sport, repetition is key - you learn to perfect the moves and even more so they become second nature - so when you are performing these fast jazz dance routines with tons of energy you can focus on the fun and style of the routine and not even have to think about pointing your feet because it's just a wonderful habit that
you have created in ballet.
At Vibe our focus is truly on teaching each student the appreciation, technique, strength and beauty of every dance form - and with that they develop great self confidence and self gratification, a love for the art of dance and just plain having fun dancing!!!!
